Dogs Help Kids, Inc. provides animal-assisted interventions with developmentally delayed and autistic children in the school environment. We are two professional teachers and one college psychology major who work with these special children with our trained assistance dogs. Our advisory board consists of a group of professional educators, veterinarians, and legal consultants. All of our dogs are recorded with AKC and OFA under the kennel name Heartlivestock's.
Our first trained dog, Max, goes daily to school for 15 to 30 minute sessions. These are one-on-one with students who are autistic, SSD, Mildly and Moderately Impaired, and other categories of learning disabilities.
As a retired teacher, it is my belief that every school needs their own animal intervention program. One of the greatest of our goals is literacy. In addition to serving the special education students, we have seen that an assistance dog within the school environment helps to create positive change in the areas of academic performance and behavior modification.
